IFRA (International Fragrance Association) is recognized as being the global governing body of perfumery. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the organization is responsible for initiating most of the self-regulatory initiatives and practices that have bearing on perfumery around the world. It is the main representative in the affairs of the fragrance industry worldwide. One of its main endeavors includes ensuring the safety of fragrant materials and products, via a specifically designed, science-based program. The IFRA also publishes a list of standards regarding usage, and regarding the makeup and integrity of fragrance materials, as well as outlining the prohibited items and practices involved with fragrance production. Their standards are based on the findings of the Research Institute of Fragrance Materials, which is responsible for gathering data and information that regards the safety, as well as ethics, associated with certain fragrance materials.
